About the Prizes
Since 1986, the French-American Foundation, with the long standing support of the Florence Gould Foundation, has awarded annual Translation Prizes for the best translation from French to English in Fiction and Non Fiction. In twenty years, the Translation Prize has established itself as a valuable element of the intellectual and cultural exchange between both countries by:
Promoting French literature in the United States
By extending the reach of literature beyond the first language, the Prizes contribute to broadening audiences for French literature in fiction and non-fiction.
Giving translators and their craft more visibility
By honoring outstanding translations among publishers and readers alike, the Foundation encourages the greater understanding of French works of substantial merit for the American public, drawing public attention to the very best new translations of the current year.
Encouraging the American publishers who bring significant French texts to the English reading audience
The Prizes also seek to draw public attention to the publishers who bring important French works of literature to the American market, by publicizing the titles and giving more visibility to the books they publish.
