Past Journalism Programs at the French-American Foundation

Fostering exchange among media professionals has been an integral part of the Foundation’s mission for over 30 years. From 1977 until 2000, the Foundation sponsored the exchange of nearly 100 French and American journalists—giving them the opportunity to spend two months working in a news outlet in the other country.

The French-American Foundation has also worked to eliminate stereotypes, clarify misunderstandings, and discuss other journalistic challenges in France and the United States. Over the course of 2003 and 2004, the Foundation organized three conferences wherein veteran journalists like William Kristol of the Weekly Standard, James O’Shea, managing editor of the Chicago Tribune, Nicolas Beytout, editor in chief of Le Figaro, and Michael Golden, publisher of the International Herald Tribune shared experiences and best practices.

In addition, the Foundation’s flagship Young Leaders program—which brings together young, outstanding French and American professionals—has attracted top-tier members of the press. Alumni include Michael Oreskes of the Associated Press, Katrin Bennhold of the International Herald Tribune, Romesh Ratnesar of Time, Erik Izraelewicz of La Tribune, Gwen Ifill of Washington Week, and Christine Ockrent of France Monde.
